Break down of our day

We generally get up anywhere between 6:30 am and 7:30 am, we all head downstairs and I make breakfast for the kids. I then let the kiddos watch TV for a bit CBeebies or a DVD only, no adverts see! I do my morning prayers whilst the children are watching the goggle box. I then need to sit down and chill for an hour before I do anything as I am pretty stiff in the morning and my legs and feet hurt a lot. I have several cups of decaf tea and then quickly go through the days activities to make sure that everything is ready.

9:30 am -  School starts  with a story, as we are following Charlotte Mason for literature we are reading the Beatrix Potter stories, Aesops Fables and other books suggested on the Ambleside online curriculum and Charlotte Mason help(www.charlottemasonhelp.com). Charlotte Mason did not recommend children to start officially until 6 and we are kind of following that principle, we have not started any of yr 1 curriculum but are using suggestions for literature from other homeschoolers like Linday Fay and the eeman.net to name a few. We also do not do narration, where the child recounts the story in their own words instead we just talk about our favourite part of the book or some other salient point from the story.

Some of the books we use

10 am - Once we have read the story we make Dua and then move to the table to do our reading. We use a Montessori curriculum that I put together from all over the web for learning to read.
We are currently doing Pink series and are just learning the sight words that go with this particular series, I use the Helpful Garden resources which are free for Pink series and I have made loads of sight word resources.
Sight word Lilly pad game - Spread on the floor and then throw the frog, which ever word the frog lands on  read it!

One of the things I love about Montessori is its logical organisation I mean why overload your child with loads of sight words at once, when all they need to read the first set of reading books is a few like; the, of, she, he, has etc..... This session in line with Charlotte Masons principles is only 15 minutes long.

10:15 am - Time for copy work, we are currently working through the alphabet. I get Nubis to copy out 2 lowercase and two uppercase of each letter, we do four letters a day and we do the same ones until he is forming them nicely. One of the core principles of CM is perfect execution, however what is perfect for a 12 yr old and a 5 yr old is very different.

10:30 am - Break time. If the weather is nice I will let the children out in the garden, if not then I let them just play. I am planning on doing some form of exercise in time for me and the children just not sure what yet. So at the moment I prep lunch whilst the children play.

11 am - Math, we use Karen Tylers album and are presently doing teens and the decimal system. Maths is definitely the subject that Nuh finds the easiest he really likes Maths and Alhamdulilah really gets it. This was a surprise for me because his oration skills have always been very good for his age so I naturally assumed he would be good at language work. Just goes to show eh!
This is our longest session and that is because he loves it so I extend it sometimes its 30 minutes but more often its 40.  We have all of the beads for the Montessori curriculum and most of the other maths materials, I made some myself like the teen boards which are simply laminates and the hundred board, but we bought most of it. I feel that this is important, if you are doing Montessori you need the maths manipulatives.

A worksheet I made for teen work
11: 40 am - This is when we do our other subjects like Geography, History or craft. We use a mixture of Karen Tylers album and one I found free on the web for Geography & History.  Craft tends to be on a seasonal theme, so this month we are all about winter. I generally search around the web and pin my ideas on my boards at Pinterest.

Using the sand timers to measure time

12:30 -  lunch and end of school

After lunch I do whatever house work needs doing or that I am capable of doing. Or we go out and meet with friends, I meet up with two other sisters who home school their children all our children are the same age approximately so it works well.  I try to meet up with these sisters once a fortnight and we either do museum visits or just let them play. Other activities we might do are gardening or baking.
