Why did we start so late!

The traditional Montessori curriculum's go from 3-6, 6-9 and 6-12. Unfortunately we started a little late, well 2 years late to be precise. The reason for this was that when our oldest was about 1 and we decided that we wanted to home school we did a lot of research about homeschooling and the various curriculum's. After much deliberation we decided that we would not instruct him until he was about 6/7. We were also planning on following a Classical Education curriculum, which appealed to our sense of academic rigour.
However when Nuh reached four he suddenly announced he wanted to be able to read himself, I delayed him as I was worried that teaching him too early might put him off of reading for life. Anyway after much thought, research and consideration i thought I would teach him the phonetic alphabet. We bought the 'Jolly Phonics' books and I attempted to teach him phonics. After a about 6/7  sessions it quickly became apparent that Nuh did not like this style of learning, he did not like learning the sounds and then having to write them so I decided to look around for a more suitable method. I had heard about Montessori but never really looked into it, anyway I was searching for inspiration one day when I suddenly remembered something about the founders of Google being montessorians. I Googled Montessori and the rest is history.
